Curriculum Rationale

"The limits of my language means the limits of my world." Ludwig Wittgenstein
"A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new." Albert Einstein

Our curriculum has developed from the needs of our children and our own belief in educating the whole child.  We feel that a rich diet of learning experiences is undoubtedly the best way to develop well-rounded, happy individuals and by focusing comprehensively on the developmental needs of our children, they are more wholly prepared for adult life after school.

We are ambitious for every child, developing successful students with engagement, support and challenges ensuring our rural location is a teaching resource rather than a handicap to our children’s experiences.  The Governors prioritise funds for travel costs, visitors and specialists in order for our children to engage with learning, be proud of their homes and develop an awareness of the wider world.  Our family school develops caring and compassionate children who collaborate and co-operate across all age groups.

The imaginative planning ensures coverage and content for all the subjects of the National Curriculum often created around topics relevant to our children and including quality texts.  We hold themed weeks, adding further enrichment to our curriculum and often encompassing a focus that has arisen from our assessments in the foundation subjects.  Knowledge is important to us, as is developing the skills and curiosity to be genuine life long learners. Every subject policy reinforces our aim to stimulate curiosity, develop respect for people at home and around the world and to develop a sense of identity and pride in our area.

Language is at the heart of education.  As the OUP say in their report Why Closing the Word Gap Matters

“Language opens doors. It unlocks the world of reading and the imagination, the excitement of writing, the capacity to explore new subjects and releases our potential to learn and grow as an individual.”

Whole class guided reading has become a staple of our cross-curricular planning and we have developed a vocabulary policy in order to specifically teach language to all our children.

As always, if you have any questions regarding the curriculum we teach please contact the school directly.
